Having both primary and secondary insurance doesn't mean you have double coverage for your breast pumps. Typically you can only get one pump per pregnancy and it must be billed to your primary insurance plan. The secondary plan will likely only cover your breast pump if your primary is denied.
Some Common Insurance Scenarios:
- If you're a dependent on an insurance plan, that plan is likely your secondary. Your own plan will be the primary.
- If you're a dependent on both plans, the plan of the person whose birthday comes first in the calendar year becomes your primary plan.
- If you have a Tricare or government-funded plan, it will always be secondary to a commercial plan (ie. Aetna or Cigna).
